Porsche Cayenne Apple CarPlay Upgrade: My 2016 GTS with Mr12Volt

Having already fitted Mr12Volt to my BMW E92 M3, I knew what I wanted from my 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS: wireless Apple CarPlay without replacing the factory Porsche PCM 3.1 system.

As the owner of CarPlay Direct, I like using the products we sell in my own cars. It means I experience the installation and the finished system in exactly the same way our customers do.

Upgrading my Porsche in the UAE

CarPlay Direct is based in the UK, but we supply customers worldwide and have recently expanded our presence in the Middle East. With my Cayenne in Dubai, it was a good opportunity to have the system installed by one of our trusted UAE fitters and experience the process first-hand.

With the Cayenne, I wanted to keep the original Porsche PCM 3.1 system rather than replace it with a completely aftermarket head unit. The Mr12Volt P3000-PM31 allows me to add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the original Porsche PCM, touchscreen and steering wheel controls.

It is essentially the best of both worlds: the factory Porsche system stays in place, but the technology is brought up to date.

Why Upgrade the Porsche Cayenne PCM 3.1?

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS is still a fantastic car, but technology has moved on considerably since it was built. For me, Apple CarPlay was the biggest missing feature.

I wanted easy access to navigation, music and calls without replacing the PCM unit with an aftermarket screen or changing the look of the interior. Mr12Volt works alongside the existing Porsche system, so the upgrade feels integrated rather than added on.

That is especially important with well-specified Porsche models. Features such as 360-degree cameras, Bose or Burmester audio and the original controls are part of the car, and upgrading to CarPlay should not mean sacrificing them.

Since expanding CarPlay Direct into the UAE, I also take more business calls while I am on the move. Retaining the Porsche's original microphone was particularly important to me. The Mr12Volt system lets me use it with wireless CarPlay, so call quality remains clear and natural.

A feature I really enjoy using in my Cayenne is the 360-degree camera system. Being able to use the cameras alongside the Apple CarPlay system makes a noticeable difference to the everyday driving experience, particularly when parking and manoeuvring the car. It's one of those features that you quickly get used to having, so keeping that functionality while upgrading the system was important to me.

The Mr12Volt Porsche CarPlayUpgrade

The P3000-PM31 is designed specifically for Porsche vehicles with PCM 3.1 and connects directly to the car's MOST fibre-optic network - the same digital audio path used by the factory system.

That means you can add Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without giving up the original touchscreen, steering wheel controls, factory microphone or factory audio quality.

There is no need for the cabin to look modified or for the Porsche system to feel replaced. Once installed, CarPlay simply becomes another part of the car.

A Porsche That Still FeelsLike a Porsche

Ultimately, that's what I wanted from my Cayenne.

I didn't want a completely new infotainment system. I didn't want to change the interior or compromise the original Porsche setup. I simply wanted the technology to catch up with the car.

And having now used Mr12Volt in both my BMW and my Porsche, I'm able to see first-hand why OEM integration matters - not just as a product feature, but as something that genuinely makes a difference to the way you use your car every day.

This is what a good Porsche CarPlay retrofit should do: modernise the technology without taking away what makes the original Porsche feel special.
If you're interested in adding Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to your Porsche in Dubai, Abu Dabi or anywhere else worldwide, CarPlay Direct can supply Mr12Volt products direct.
