Having used both the Mr12Volt P2000 and P3000 in my own cars, I've had the chance to experience the difference between them first-hand.
As the owner of CarPlay Direct, the official UK stockist for Mr12Volt, I've been using and supplying Mr12Volt Apple CarPlay and Android Auto retrofit kits for some time. The P2000 was the system I knew well and had personally used, so when the P3000 was introduced in March 2026, I was interested to see how much of a difference the new generation would actually make.
The P2000 already offered a great way of adding wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to a vehicle’s factory infotainment system while retaining the original screen, controls and features of the car. Because Mr12Volt uses the vehicle’s MOST fibre-optic system on compatible cars, audio is integrated digitally rather than relying on a basic AUX connection.
The P3000 takes that same idea and builds on it with upgraded hardware and faster performance.

What Has Changed With the P3000?
Aside from the obvious visual difference - the P2000 unit is grey while the P3000 is green - the biggest Mr12Volt P2000 vs P3000 changes are under the surface.
The Mr12Volt P3000 has an upgraded processor, increased RAM and a new-generation chipset, including an upgraded audio DSP. It also produces less heat than the P2000.
Having used both, though, the specifications aren't necessarily what I notice most. It's how those changes translate into everyday use.

Faster Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
The biggest difference I've noticed is the connection speed. The P3000 connects to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto faster than the P2000.
It's one of those improvements that sounds fairly minor until you're using the system every day. Getting into the car and having CarPlay connect quickly makes the whole experience feel much more seamless.
For me, this is probably the most noticeable reason to consider the P3000.

Improved Microphone Audio
The P3000 also gives you more control over individual audio levels.
One of the improvements I noticed moving from the P2000 to the P3000 was the extra control over audio levels.
With the P2000, you couldn’t adjust different audio sources independently, whereas the P3000 lets you set your preferred volume for things like navigation, music and calls.
It’s a small change, but when you use the system every day, it makes the overall experience feel a little more refined.
USB Firmware Updates
The P3000 also allows firmware updates through USB, making it easier to keep the system updated if needed. The USB connection is located on the Mr12Volt power harness and can be routed to a more convenient position for future updates. With the P2000, access to the physical Mr12Volt unit is required.
It's not something you'll necessarily think about when choosing a Mr12Volt CarPlay retrofit, but I think it's a useful improvement for the future.
Mr12Volt P2000 vs P3000: Is the P3000 Worth the Upgrade?
If you're already using a P2000, I don't think upgrading is something you have to do. If your current system is working well and you're happy with it, the P2000 is still a very capable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto retrofit. If you're buying a Mr12Volt kit for the first time, however, I would choose the newer P3000 where it is available for your vehicle.
That being said, having used both systems myself, I personally prefer the P3000. In my opinion, the faster connection, more independent volume controls and improved microphone call quality make a noticeable difference to the overall experience, alongside the upgraded hardware.
So, it's less about the P2000 being outdated and more about the P3000 being the next step forward.
